China Puts Green Hydrogen Front‑and‑Center in Its Latest Government Report

China’s push for clean energy has taken a big step forward: for the first time, green fuels are highlighted in the nation’s official work report. The National Energy Administration’s 2025 Hydrogen Energy Development Report shows that China now leads the world in hydrogen production and use, with more than 36.5 million tonnes produced and consumed in 2024 – a share of over one‑third of global demand. Half of the world’s renewable‑hydrogen capacity, roughly 125,000 tonnes per year, comes from China, thanks to a rapid build‑out of wind‑ and solar‑powered electrolyzers. The country has also rolled out about 24,000 fuel‑cell vehicles and over 540 hydrogen‑refueling stations, letting the technology move beyond pilots into trucks, port equipment and other heavy‑duty applications. Chinese fuel‑cell power generators are now cheap enough to compete internationally, and exports are growing. Hydrogen is finding new roles in transport, power generation, industry and chemicals, while related green fuels such as methanol, biodiesel, ammonia and sustainable aviation fuel are expanding their footprints. The report notes that hydrogen is now a key pillar of China’s 14th Five‑Year Plan, joining other frontier technologies like quantum computing and next‑gen communications. With strong policy backing, a complete supply chain and booming demand, green hydrogen is set to become a cornerstone of China’s low‑carbon future.
